How to Make Oven Baked Crispy Homemade Hash Browns

Crispy Oven Baked Hash Browns

Preheat oven to 400 degrees

Crispy Hash Browns

Ingredients:

  • 7 cups – Frozen Shredded Potatoes
  • 1/2 tsp – Salt
  •  3/4 tsp – Pepper
  • 4 Tbsp – Coconut Oil

Instructions:

This recipe does require a bit more coconut oil than my Best Ever Crispy Stove Top Hash Brown recipe.

Using a large iron skillet, I use my 10 inch, heat over medium heat to get really hot.   Once iron skillet is hot, add 4 tablespoons of coconut oil to cover the bottom.  Tilt skillet to cover surface thoroughly

Toss in frozen homemade hash browns.  Spread into an even layer about 1 inch thick, add salt and pepper to your taste.  Iron skillet should be hot when adding hash browns. They will “sizzle”

Homemade Hash Browns ready to go into Oven

Using a pot holder or oven mitt, place iron skillet on bottom rack in oven – bake 10-20 minutes undisturbed

Remove from oven and toss with a metal spatula, like this one, the bottom side will be crispy

Flip crispy hash browns to the top, placing others to the bottom.  I do this in sections, no need to try to flip the entire pan all at once.  Drizzle with coconut oil, if needed

Sprinkle with more salt and pepper to your liking

Place hash browns back into oven and bake for 12-15 minutes longer, undisturbed

Remove from oven.  If needed, flip and cook longer to achieve the ratio of brown to white you like

Serve hot

    1. Hi Sue,

I’ve not tried freezing them after they are cooked. The only thing I can think of is them possible becoming soft or mushy when they are reheated. You wouldn’t want to “cook” them again. If you do it, I suggest reheating in the oven rather than a microwave.

  1. These hash browns look delicious – and easy! I love the idea of baking them as we always have trouble trying to get them crispy on the stove top without burning. We grew potatoes this year and have loved having our own potatoes to eat! So fun. And they’re definitely tastier than store bought in my opinion. Will definitely grow them again this year. Looking forward to gardening. Jan in MA
