The new name is:  Triple Chocolate Oreo Crumble, thanks to Emily F. in Athens, TN.

It’s my favorite – Chocolate!  Yes, I love it and most everyone that I know loves it too.  Anytime I am offered  chocolate, it’s hard for me to say no. I mean come on, who doesn’t love to have a little bit of chocolate once in a while.  I agree, we don’t need it a lot, but…every now and again – it’s ok.

We’ve been planning a bonfire here on the homestead for several weeks now and I knew that we would have our normal Smore’s available with graham crackers, marshmallows and chocolate and a cake too, but I wanted to try something new and a little different than our normal dessert.  I didn’t have a lot of time though with preparing it so it had to be simple and quick.  No time for the “made from scratch” stuff that we would normally have.

On a whim, I ran into our local Dollar General Store to grab a couple quick items and on the shelf sat the cutest little half-pint mason jars.  They were strictly for decorative purposes and not for preserving but I thought they were just too cute to pass up, so I grabbed the box of 12 and headed to the register with them.  It hit me really quickly as I was driving home, I could use the sweet little jars I had just bought and do something with them at the bonfire – but what?

I delve into my typical Pinterest search and put in mason jar desserts and of course the screen was loaded.  After reading through several that were made from scratch and knowing that I didn’t have the time, I decided to take my own way out and make my own version of a chocolate dessert in a jar.  I don’t claim to have created this recipe, it is a combination of several that I found in my search and if it is exact to someone, please comment and let me know.  I don’t even have a name for the dessert but it went over very well and a few friends have ask for the recipe, so today I’m sharing with you exactly what I did.

INGREDIENTS:

1 package Oreo Cookies – crushed

2 large boxes Jello Instant Pudding Mix -Chocolate

1 can Reddi Whip

6 cups  cold Whole Milk

DIRECTIONS:

  1. The first thing I did was to use my Ninja Chopper to chop the Oreos into very small pieces and set the cookies aside in a large bowl.  If you don’t have a chopper, you can put your cookies into a Ziploc bag and crush them using a rolling pin.
  2. Follow directions exactly on box of instant pudding mix.  I did 1 box at a time because I wasn’t sure how much I would  need.  The pudding does not “thicken” immediately, it has to sit for 2-3 minutes.  So while it was still in liquid form, I poured it into a 1 gallon Ziploc bag and closed it up.

I used a Ziploc bag because I don’t have a Cake Icing Kit with a Silicon Bag but I knew I could cut a bottom corner off the bag and squeeze the pudding into the small mouth jars.  I will admit, I didn’t come up with this particular idea either, I have read this on someone’s blog that I read, but I’m so sorry, I tried to go through and find a link, but no luck.

3. Once you have your Oreo’s crushed and your pudding made, you are ready to make your dessert.  It super simple, and it’s done in repeating layers:

ASSEMBLY:

4. I began with a layer of Oreo’s in the bottom of the jar.

Crushed Oreo’s in Mason Jar

5. Next, squeezed in a layer of the Jello Pudding from the zip lock bag

6. Put in a very thin layer of Reddi Whip.

7. Repeat layers until jar is filled.

Layers in Mason Jar

In my half-pint Mason Jar, I ended up with 2 layers of:

Oreo’s

Reddi Whip

Jello Instant Pudding

and then I placed the jars onto a cookie sheet and sat them in the refrigerator until we were ready to eat them that evening at the bonfire.

Layered Dessert stored until time to serve

I didn’t get to take a picture of the completed dessert with a layer of Reddi Whip on top.  But that would be real simple, squirt…  it’s done!!

Now the catch to the story, I ran around trying to decide what I was going to make, gathered all my ingredients of a whim and made the dessert.  The night the bonfire took place, I came in the house late and ready for bed.  Decided to leave all the clean-up until morning.

When I opened my refrigerator the next morning, there sat my desserts!  I had failed to get them out at the bonfire, so my daughter took them to work with her and gave them to the ladies in her office.

Have you ever worked hard on something only to forget about it when the time to use it came?  Feel free to comment below.

Not sure you noticed the title, but my dessert needs a name.  I’m calling it dessert in a jar for now.  If you will, go to comments below and help give it a name, please.
